A miraculous transformation

The Monastery of St. Francis & Gorton Trust was established 21 years ago and is still responsible today for our iconic and magnificent building. The transformation from a state of near dereliction to an award-winning centre of inspiration has been an incredible tale of almost miraculous achievement.

Sharing the story

We were once listed as one of the world’s 100 most endangered sites, alongside the Taj Mahal. Our success has been underpinned by both generous funders and the income generated from weddings and other wonderful events. All of these efforts were for the single purpose of ‘sharing the story’ of the heritage we have protected.

We will never forget where we came from or who we are.

The Monastery was created by and for the community of Gorton and remains at its spiritual heart. Our reach has extended far and wide, even globally.

We’re open to the public throughout the year: you can pre-book a tour, attend an event, enjoy lunch or a sumptuous afternoon tea in our amazing Victorian Pantry.
Autumn/Winter hours: October and November, Sunday to Tuesday (11am-4pm); December to February, Sundays (11am-4pm). Victorian Pantry open Sunday to Friday, (11am-4pm). Please note, The Victorian Pantry will be closed on Sunday 9th December due to our Christmas Concerts.

Everyone you meet will make you feel welcome, and we’ll try to ensure your experience is the best it can possibly be. And then YOU will become part of OUR story.
