VE Day 80th Anniversary Commemoration

Join us for an uplifting VE Day 80 Manchester gathering in the soaring nave of the Monastery, on Thursday 8 May 2025 (12 pm – 3 pm). Eight decades after the allies emerged victorious from WWII, we’ll open our doors – free of charge and with heartfelt welcome – to honour those who stood against fascism and tyranny, to remember the lives lost, and to celebrate and appreciate the hard-won peace we still enjoy today.

Let voices rise, memories glow and gratitude guide us as Manchester marks VE Day 80 together.

What can I expect?

12 pm – 1 pm National Silence & Monastery Meditation Hour

Embrace a full hour of quiet contemplation, framed by the traditional two-minute silence at noon. This tranquil pause invites personal prayer, collective remembrance and mindful gratitude beneath the Monastery’s vaulted arches.

1 pm – 3 pm Live music & communal remembrance

Gorton Voice Community Choir and DYT Choir fill the Great Nave with stirring wartime standards and contemporary pieces of hope and unity.

A special organ recital by Stephen Mann (the Monastery’s last resident organist) resonates through the historic pipe organ, echoing hymns of courage and consolation.

How will I benefit?

Reflect & reconnect – Give yourself space to honour forebears and contemplate the cost of freedom.

Lift your spirits – Soul-stirring choral harmonies and majestic organ music soothe the heart.

Meet your neighbours – Swap stories with veterans, families and local history enthusiasts in a welcoming, inter-generational setting.

Practise gratitude – Step away from daily noise and remember the power of unity against oppression.

Who is it for?

All ages, faiths and backgrounds are welcome. The event is fully family-friendly and accessible facilities throughout the venue.

Whether you have a direct family link to WWII or simply wish to pay your respects, you’ll find a warm seat and a friendly greet.
