The Gorton Voice Community Choir rehearse every Tuesday afternoon, 3 – 4.15pm, right here at the Monastery and you’re warmly invited to join us!
Singing is good for the soul, so they say, and that’s certainly the case for this inspiring and accomplished local choir, who we at the Monastery are very honoured to host.
This passionately inclusive choir believes that everyone has a singing voice and are inspired and encouraged to sing by their talented musical director and keyboard player Mark McKenzie. You don’t have to be able to read music, and you will soon find your own niche; soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Mark teaches the harmonies and before long you will hear how all the voices blend together beautifully.
Do I need any experience?
Not at all! Everyone is welcome and no previous experience is necessary.
Is there any cost?
A fee of £15 per month is payable, to cover the musical director’s fee and other choir expenses.
Do I need to book?
No, simply turn up for rehearsal and introduce yourself and we’ll take it from there 🙂
About Gorton Voice Community Choir
Founded during the restoration of Gorton Monastery by Ilma Scantlebury, Audrey Bradshaw, Iram Aslam and Rev. David Gray, with the professional support of voice coach Kadria Thomas and keyboard maestro Mark McKenzie, Gorton Voice aimed to help the local community express itself in music via Gospel, Civil Rights, African, Celtic, Native American, Pop and other music forms.
Gorton Voice rehearse right here at the Monastery from 3pm each Tuesday. The choir welcomes membership from local people of all ages, faiths, cultures and backgrounds. You don’t need singing experience to join – the choir will bring out the natural talent you may not yet realise you posses.
As well as appearing on TV in shows like Songs of Praise; A Passion for Churches and Choir of the Year, Gorton Voice Community Choir have played venues such as Bridgewater Hall, Buckley Hall Prison, Community Festivals, Manchester Cathedral and the Monastery itself. They have appeared on TV (A Passion for Churches; Songs of Praise) and performed on radio too. On occasion, members with little previous experience have honed their abilities to become accomplished entertainers in their own right.
